MN: Whats up Tyler, can you tell us how you got started off in the footwear industry?

Tyler: “I have always been fond of footwear ever since a very young age. I wrestled for the first 18 years of my life and had a huge collection of wrestling shoes (probably over 100 pairs) before I really got into sneakers. My good friend and wrestling partner (Sean Rutan),  was a huge influence for me in getting into wrestling shoes and later on, other types of footwear. I collected special German colorways back from the mid 90’s, mainly Adidas or asics along with a bunch vintage and rare stuff that were very hard to find. Sean and I were known on the mats for our shoes that we would find. My favorite pair(s) i had were the 1996 ‘Adidas Adistar’ which were Kendall Cross’ signature shoe. (1996 American Olympic Gold Medalist) or a pair of Adidas Equipment Combat Speed in teal, pink and yellow. These came out in the mid 80’s and said “Made in West Germany” right on the tongue, which was pretty cool because by the time I got them, in the early 2000’s, there was no “West Germany” anymore. I know both of these are worth a pretty penny now-a-days. Around the mid 2000’s is when i really started to get into sneakers. The silver box era for NIKE SB started it off. The Nike SB Low “Bison” was my first SB and since then, I’ve been collecting ever since.

MN: How did you get to where you are currently?

Tyler: I am now currently the content creator and coordinator for PONY footwear. I do our social media, blog along with tradeshows and assist with all marketing projects for the brand. During college, i worked at Footlocker as a sales associate. My collection grew a large amount during this time (thanks to that discount). Leaning a lot about what goes into making, producing, and the functioning of the shoes while at Footlocker, I left the footwear industry as a whole and pursued a job at Movado in the watch industry for two years, helping with design, marketing and social media. About a year ago, I was offered the job here at PONY and left Movado. I was brought on board to help relaunch the brand from the ground up. Since then, we have released collaborative product with Atmos NY, Colette Paris, WISH Atlanta with many more in the works.
