The Air Jordan 1 Low Gel Pays Homage to ’70s-Era Nike

Nike is paying homage to two notable archival models from its back catalogue with the launch of two versatile colorways of the Air Jordan 1 Low.

The first of the pack, a humble black, grey, and white model, pays tribute to the Nike Astrograbber. Released in 1976 to handle the newly-invented Astroturf football field, the shoe was comparable to Nike’s Waffle Racer with slightly beefed up construction and re-engineered Waffle spike outsole. The Jordan 1 features a colorway nearly identical to the original and comes dressed in white leather and mesh, a grey suede toeguard and eyestay wings, and a buttery black leather Swoosh.

The other Jordan 1 Low in the pack pays tribute to the “Night Track” edition of Nike’s 1978 Air Tailwind, the first shoe to ever feature Air cushioning. The silvery red colorway was first given out to high-profile celebrities like David Hasselhoff, Mr. T, and Michael Jackson, later released to the public in 2012. Its Jordan 1 Low tribute features similarly metallic silver overlays, a bright red Swoosh and sockliner, and glittery-silver laces and Jordan heel branding.
