At Anime Expo 2019 in Los Angeles, Japanese animation studio Sunrise Inc. revealed that the iconic manga and animated film, Akira, will be getting a new anime series adaptation of the story.

Akira first released as a manga in 1982 and was adapted into a cyberpunk anime film six years later. Katsuhiro Otomo, creator of both the original manga and the 1988 film, will be producing this TV series adaptation. The new TV series will adapt the whole story from the 1982 manga.

A couple of Otomo’s other projects were also revealed at Anime Expo 2019. A new film is in the works, titled Orbital Era, as well as Otomo: The Complete Works, a curated collection of all of Otomo’s works, beginning with his manga debut in 1971.

The 1988 Akira film will also be getting a 4K remastering, releasing April 24, 2020. Check out the announcement for that below. Also in Akira news, FUNimation will be releasing a replica of Kaneda’s red leather jacket for the film’s 30th anniversary.
