Following some early teasers, we now have an official look at the upcoming Nike x AMBUSH NBA collection.
“The project began with a conversation about making women feel proud to represent their favorite teams,” says YOON, the first female designer to partner with Nike and the NBA. “We were considering how to balance the culture of the sport without losing style.”
The collection features twists on traditional basketball gear offered in Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets styles. Classic tearaway warm-up pants are converted into insulated trousers complete with contrast-color double waistbands to look like game shorts are being worn underneath. The form-fitting long-sleeve tops revisit classic NBA jersey aesthetics, while the two jackets feature oversized team branding as an ode to ’90s styling. “I thought of all these amazing and strong female characters from the ’90s who would come out in men’s clothes, and I wanted to see how we could carry that attitude, but bring in more feminine forms,” she says.
The apparel collection is complemented by the AMBUSH x Nike Dunk High. Channeling Japanese bike, car and truck culture, the shoe is given an elongated and heightened form, with Swooshes extending beyond the heel-like bike pipes. “I thought, ‘how can I make the shoes almost look like this moving thing?’” says YOON.
The AMBUSH x Nike NBA collection launches globally on December 11th via Nike.com and select retailers.
