The Humble Origin of A$AP Rocky’s Met Gala Quilt

1

The Met Gala red carpet showcased a ton of unique looks this year, though one of the stand-outs was A$AP Rocky’s cozy ensemble. The Fashion Killa showed up to the event alongside Rihanna, draped in a colorful quilt. Memes quickly flooded the timeline, many comparing the quilt to a bowl of Cap’n Crunch cereal.

It turns out that the quilt originally belonged to someone’s great grandmother. After catching wind of Rocky’s Met Gala look, a woman named Sarah instantly realized that the quilt was the same one that used to cover the bed in her home. In a series of Instagram post, Sarah notes that the quilt was created by her great grandmother Mary for Sarah’s mother and was later donated to a thrift store.

The quilt was then found by ERL designer Eli Russell Linnetz and his team, who worked with Rocky to create the Met Gala look. They enlisted quilter Zak Foster to rework the backing with red flannels and make additional adjustments before its red carpet debut.

The look fit in well with the Met Gala’s theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” as quilts have been used throughout American history as family keepsakes, passed down from generation to generation.
