Following a first look, Concepts officially announces the release of its New Balance 992 “Low Hanging Fruit” project.

The Boston-based retailer has told countless stories through its products and collaborations, and has chosen the “Kiwi Queen” Frieda Rapoport Caplan as its latest protagonist. In 1962, Frieda started the first woman-owned produce business in the US and imported the first shipment of Chinese gooseberries to the country, renamed by Frieda as “kiwifruit.” Frieda not only introduced new fruits to the market, but also revolutionized the way fruits were packaged and sold. In similar fashion, Concepts was an early pioneer of special packaging for sneakers with their Nike SB “Lobster” Dunks.

Frieda’s story is a reminder that nothing is real… until pioneers make it so. In her honor, concepts has created the kiwi-themed New Balance 992 “Low Hanging Fruit” and accompanying “Nothing Is Real” apparel collection. Mimicking the look and feel of the kiwifruit. the 992s come dressed in fuzzy brown suedes and pops of neon green. The insoles come with strawberry graphics, a nod to the kiwi strawberry-flavored drink craze of the ’90s. The apparel collection also pays homage to this with word marks inspired by Fruitopia and other staple fruity beverages of the ’90s.

The Concepts x New Balance 992 “Low Hanging Fruit” will be available on November 12th at Concepts NYC, Concepts Boston, Bodega LA, and through an online raffle on cncpts.com that opens on November 10th. The Concepts “Nothing Is Real” in-house apparel collection will be available November 12 at Concepts Boston, Concepts NYC, and cncpts.com.
