Concepts x Nike Air Max 1 SP “Mellow” Release Date

After various leaks and teasers, Concepts has officially announced the release of its Nike Air Max 1 collaboration.

This project serves as a celebration of the Air Max 1’s 35th anniversary. Though the model made its debut in 1987, Concepts looks even further back for inspiration, specifically the music festival scene of the late ’60s. Each of the various prints, patterns, and materials nod to the style of festival-goers during the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, aka the Black Woodstock, aka the Summer of Soul. Think protest symbols, peace signs, floral adornments, and frayed edges.

The Concepts x Nike Air Max 1 SP collaboration comes in three colorways. The first, titled “Mellow” features an an olive green mudguard in homage to M-65 military surplus jackets. Other elements include bandana, cowhide, and woven material panels, a lateral striped Swoosh and a medial “flower power” Swoosh, and tongue tags that feature a classic ‘70s Nike logo and a hippie-style Concepts word mark.

“Nike has been a tremendous partner to Concepts. Together, our collaborative track record speaks for itself,” says Deon Point, Concepts Creative Director. “When we decided to work on the Air Max 1, a personal favorite, we wanted to fully honor the irreverent spirit of Nike from its origins in the ’60s up to today.”

The release of the Air Max 1 is complemented by an in-house “Message To The Universe” apparel collection. This includes a wide selection of tees, plus hoodies, a crewneck, sweatpants, and socks. Concepts has also brought back the baja hoodie, a classic ’70s counterculture garment.

The Concepts x Nike Air Max 1 SP “Mellow” and the Concepts “Message To The Universe” apparel collection drop on March 5th at Concepts retail locations and cncpts.com (11am ET). The other two colorways will release at a later date on SNKRS and at additional stockists.

Update (03/07/22): This colorway also drops on SNKRS on March 12th.
