Original Story (04/09/20): In late February, The Pokémon Company unveiled the Daniel Arsham × Pokémon project with Ohio-born artist, Daniel Arsham, featuring icons of the Pokemon franchise presented within the artist’s creative concept of “fictional archeology.”
“I’m delighted to welcome Daniel Arsham as our collaboration partner” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, CEO of The Pokémon Company. “Through his work, my wish is for people around the world to ‘dig deep’ into their imaginations and think about what Pokémon would look like in a thousand years.”
In a new Instagram post, Arsham gives additional details about the collaborative project. He reveals that he is the first visual artist to be granted access to the Pokémon Archive and that he has been working with the Pokémon Company and its animators for the past year. An accompanying clip shows Pikachu discovering a statue of themself in Arsham’s eroded quartz style. Through this project, Arsham intends to not only bring the Pokémon universe into his work, but also have his work “infiltrate the Pokémon universe.”
The ongoing project includes a sculptural collection that will feature characters like Pikachu, Ash Ketchum, and even a Charizard Pokémon card. Arsham has also revealed that a Uniqlo UT collaboration is on the way.
The Daniel Arsham x Pokémon Uniqlo UT launches globally on April 24th on the Uniqlo webstore. Stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for updates on this project throughout the next year.
