Reebok is continuing its celebration of the lives and creative legacies of Charles and Ray Eames with the new Eames Classic Leather “Fiberglass Pack” – a small collection of leather shoes made to evoke the patina of the duo’s vintage fiberglass furniture.
Following the “Rosewood,” “Coloring Toy,” and “Elephant Pack” releases, Reebok is back with new Classic Leathers in collaboration with Eames Office, the industrial design firm that began with Charles and Ray’s marriage and move to California in 1941 and continues today, run by the third generation of the Eames family.
The “Fiberglass Pack” draws inspiration from the Eames Molded Fiberglass Chair, the world’s first ever commercially produced plastic seating. First unveiled at the 1950 MoMA International Competition for Low Cost Furniture Design exhibition, the chair made use of fiberglass-reinforced polyester plastic, a material breakthrough that emerged during World War II.
The original Molded Fiberglass Chairs possessed a distinctive straw-like texture created by the raw fiberglass strands from which they were pressed, giving every chair its own unique patina. The Classic Leathers capture this fibrous texture on its all-leather uppers, which are bathed in three heritage Eames colorways: Parchment, Sea Foam Green, and Pink. More original colors of the Molded Fiberglass Chair appear on the insoles, which feature a 16mm print from the Eames archives taken on the set of the whimsical 1960 Eames film Kaleidoscope Jazz Chair. Each shoe comes with a collectible keychain of an Eames DAX (dining-height armchair with X-shaped base) in a matching color.
The Eames x Reebok Classic Leather “Fiberglass Pack” drops on November 17th on the Eames Office website ahead of its wider release on November 19th from Reebok.com and select retailers. Check out all three colorways below.
