After a few leaked images of the shoe, we now have an official reveal of the next Fear Of God ESSENTIALS x Converse collab. This team-up marks the return of the Skidgrip, a model whose story begins in 1910 with the debut of the Converse Circular Vamp Oxford (CVO). Watch the video below for a quick rundown on the Skidgrip’s 110-year history.

Jerry Lorenzo’s take on the Skidgrip is inspired by the 1987 Hi Top version of the Skidgrip, known then as the Con-Rad. As a kid, Lorenzo found a pair of Con-Rads at the mall covered in bold prints and it became his favorite shoe from that summer. When Lorenzo found a vintage pair of Skidgrips in Tokyo a few years ago, he says, “all the emotions came rushing back.”

Lorenzo reprises the ’87 graphics for the upper on the Fear Of God ESSENTIALS x Converse Skidgrip. The tooling, on the other hand, has been revamped with Lorenzo’s modern touch, complete with a sleek, 30-degree slope along the midsole from heel to toe. “The sole is the biggest takeaway when you look at the sneaker,” says Lorenzo. “It feels very much like our main line, the Fear of God 101, and gives it the same feeling looking down as looking down at the Skidgrip in the late ’80s.”

The Converse x Fear of God ESSENTIALS Skidgrip releases August 27th at select retailers and converse.com for a retail price of $120 USD. Additional inline versions of the Skidgrip arrive in September.
