Original Story (04/20/22): Nike will soon be releasing a collection of Hello Kitty footwear and apparel, including a new version of the ultra-rare Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto.
In 2004, Sanrio celebrated the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty with a traveling art exhibition titled Kitty EX. This exhibition featured special artwork and product created by a group of 60 different artists, designers, and brands from around the world. Nike was selected as one of the participants for Kitty EX and had plans of releasing a collection of Hello Kitty x Nike Air Prestos to the public.
According to Steven Smith, one of the designers that Mark Parker tasked with creating the OG Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto, the initial plans were to create four colorways and for 500 pairs of each to be released to the public. This didn’t end up happening. Instead, only a few dozen total pairs were made for friends and family. The two most prominent colorways from this run are the white/pink pair, designed by Hiroshi Fujiwara, and the black/grey pair, designed by Steven Smith.
Almost two decades later, the Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto makes its return, this time releasing to the general public. The 2022 version features similar design cues to the 2004 pairs, though colors have been updated. It features a University Blue upper covered with a Hello Kitty all-over print. This is paired with a white TPU cage and transparent toe cap. Additional details include Hello Kitty’s face on the heels, white midsoles, black outsoles, and graphic insoles. The Prestos come in a special box and are accompanied by a collection of Hello Kitty x Nike apparel that includes a hoodie, pants, and tees.
