Following the release of the Club C and Classic Leather earlier this year, Maison Margiela and Reebok unveil three more silhouettes from their collaborative “Memory Of” collection: the Question Mid, Zig 3D Storm, and Instapump Fury.
Maison Margiela’s signature concept of the memory of is applied to the silhouettes through a process of deconstruction. Familiar elements act as a visual recollection of an object that is no longer materially visible. This is paired with Maison Margiela’s practice of decortiqué, a term for cutting up an item to reveal the inner structure that holds it together.
These unconventional techniques are used as the foundation for reinterpretations of three Reebok classics, each offered in both tonal white and tonal black. Leading the pack is the Question Mid, its signature lace loops shifted to the center of the tongue, leaving behind oval holes which are repurposed as eyelets for a lacing system reminiscent of gillies. In addition, paneling on the lateral and heel is peeled away and exposes the inner foam. The Hexalite tech found in its usual place on the midsole is also incorporated onto the tongue, and the Allen Iverson number 3 on the heel is replaced with a debossed “22” referencing the footwear code of Maison Margiela.
The Zig 3D Storm “Memory Of” features an upper that has been inverted inside-out while the distinct Zig tooling underfoot is kept intact. The spliced tongue displays breathable perforations used for lacing, while a transparent window showcases the printed shell and graphics that are now on the shoe’s interior. The construction consists of microfibre normally found on the sockliner, as well as clear nylon, cotton twill, and foil.
Rounding out the collection is the Instapump Fury “Memory Of.” Rendered in the vein of an exploded-view drawing, components have been separated to evoke its usual form. The heel area has been remodeled using the flexible bridges normally seen in the center hole of the inflatable pump bladder. The deconstruction approach is applied through the exposed foam around the heel displaying a natural color along with mesh applied to the toe. The mudguard around the toe box is stripped of its seams, in so adding a 3D effect.
