The New Balance 2002R “Protection Pack” has been highly-anticipated since images of the shoes first appeared online. We finally have some release info for the pack thanks to New York City-based boutique Extra Butter, who will be launching the “Protection Pack” ahead of its wider North America release.

New Balance designer Yue Wu’s original concept for the 2002R “Protection Pack” revolves around the theme of “refined future.” The designer saw how old folks on the streets of Boston would wear their NBs until they began to deteriorate, inspiring the idea of NB’s being such great quality that they would last a lifetime. Yue Wu decided to showcase this longevity by adding “eroded” panels and pre-distressed elements to the 2002R, giving the shoe a timeless energy. The New Balance 2002R “Protection Pack” features three colorways: Rain Cloud/Magnet, Phantom/Magnet, and Sea Salt/Munsell White.

Extra Butter will be launching a “Refined Future” private label capsule alongside the “Protection Pack,” featuring a Y2K aesthetic inspired by Yue Wu’s concept for the 2002R. This capsule includes three t-shirt variations, a trucker hat, and crew socks, each with graphics reminiscent of the dated technology of the Y2K era. Customers of the advance release will also enjoy a complimentary limited edition 45-min “Refined Future” Y2K mixtape, produced by Extra Butter and mixed by Darling Chuck.

The New Balance 2002R “Protection Pack” and Extra Butter “Refined Future” capsule will be available at Extra Butter’s Lower East Side and Long Island City locations on Friday, August 13th, followed by a digital launch on the Extra Butter website and app on August 14th. A North America release for the 2002R “Protection Pack” via New Balance and select retailers is slated for August 20th.
