It’s been a big year for New Balance.
The Boston-based sneaker giants have delivered countless big-name releases, teaming up with the likes of JJJJound, Aimé Leon Dore, CNCPTS, and more. They’ve also given their in-house releases time to shine, with new colorways of the 992 and 327 coming out regularly and to substantial fanfare. However, they’re now set to re-release one of their pinnacle performance runners of the past two decades: the New Balance 2002.
Dubbed the “Rolls Royce of running shoes” upon its original 2010 release, the model has been historically made in the USA and considered to be of incredible craftsmanship. The 2002 is set to be re-dubbed the 2002R to signify the few updates that have been made; notably, the original model’s exposed forefoot N-Ergy has now been either swapped out or encased in ABZORB foam. The shoe’s upper has remained largely unchanged, with luxurious nubuck and leather overlays atop a supple durable mesh.
Of note, the 2002R is the model that Versace footwear VP Salehe Bembury is redressing in his upcoming fuzzy orange collaboration with New Balance. The model’s return to New Balance’s mainline offerings suggests that other collaborative partners will paint on the unique and timeless canvas that the 2002R offers, so keep an eye out for more news related to the model.
