Nike entered the football (soccer for us Americans) scene in 1971 with the launch of their first football boot (soccer cleat), known simply as “The Nike.” It cost $16.95 and was the first shoe released by Nike to feature the Swoosh. “The Nike” is now making its return in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Nike was not particularly proud of “The Nike,” as it “didn’t hold up well in cold and wet weather” and the company was focusing more on running, tennis, and basketball footwear at the time. Still, it is an important part of the company’s history, as it was the stepping stone that led to more advance products, such as the Tiempo and Mercurial.

2021’s “The Nike” is true to the original, equipped with a black leather upper with a white leather Swoosh and heel panel. A graphic in reference to the Mexico 1970 World Cup found on the original release is still present on the tongues, insoles, and outsoles. Underfoot are thirteen conical studs, the standard for cleats at the time. These are meant to be a collector’s item, limited to 1,971 pairs, and are only releasing in size 9 US.
