Original Story (08/18/22): Nike’s celebration of the Air Force 1’s 40th anniversary has included the release of special colorways that celebrate specific locales, such as the “Little Accra” AF-1 for the Ghanaian Bronx neighborhood and the “LA Flea” for the flea markets of Los Angeles. As the AF-1 is beloved globally, Nike also has created special overseas colorways, including this “Izakaya” Air Force 1 Mid.

Izakaya is a Japanese word made up of three kanji with the meaning “stay-drink-place.” Izakaya is the Japanese version of the pub, a place of relaxation where adults can enjoy alcohol and food.

The “Izakaya” Air Force 1 Mid is dressed in a color scheme inspired by a typical izakaya, with ivory canvas used for the base of the upper and beige leather overlays representing the wooden furniture. The red star motif on the left heel is reminiscent of the Sapporo logo, nodding to the Japanese beer brand commonly served at izakayas. Meanwhile, the right heel is stamped with a Shigakari Ware graphic. Shigakari Ware is traditional Japanese pottery of a raccoon dog (tanuki), which is typically placed in businesses to attract prosperity. Addition to the theme is a receipt on the tongue, similar to the bill received after a long night at the bar. However, instead of a list of all the drinks consumed, the receipt is printed with a timeline of the Air Force 1’s history.

Check out the Nike Air Force 1 Mid “Izakaya” below. These drop at Japanese retailers such as atmos on Thursday, August 25th.

Update (08/25/22): The Air Force 1 Mid “Izakaya” drops on September 7th in the US on SNKRS and at select retailers.
