Japan Designs Its Own Nike Air Max 1

As part of the Air Max 1’s 35th anniversary celebration, Nike has launched “Nike Design by Japan,” the first project in the brand’s history where a sneaker was developed with input from SNKRS app users in Japan.

Eric Goto, the design director for Nike Design by Japan, has revealed the first sample from this project. The Air Max 1 “Design by Japan” has a vintage running aesthetic, dressed in a green, white, and orange color scheme inspired by the Nike Sting, an early running shoe from 1978. A yellowed midsole and Nike wording on the heels add to the vintage aesthetic. The shoe also comes equipped with metallic Air Max 1 pendants as a nod to Japan’s love for Nike and its history of running innovation.

Check out the sample of the Nike Air Max 1 “Design by Japan” below. These are slated to drop on SNKRS in Japan in early 2023.
