Nike is Releasing an Onigiri-Inspired Air Max 90

Nike’s Japanese “Mini-Mart” Air Max Pack, which features the Nike Air Max 95 “Japan” (aka “Swoosh Mart”) as well as the Air Max 97 “Energy Jelly,” sees the addition of the Air Max 90 “Onigiri,” inspired by the Japanese convenience store rice ball snack.

Onigiri, O-Musubi, or Nigirimeshi, is an iconic Japanese snack made of white rice formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes wrapped in nori. The shoe reflects the inspiration with a seaweed-like textured upper highlighted with Aqua Blue contrasting accents. The “Air Max” and “Nike Air” emblem on the side and heel have been reimagined with red covering. We see the onigiri inspiration again in a plastic wrapper-inspired mudguard and “pull” instructions on the tongue tab and laces, reflecting the product’s packaging. The pair finishes with a blue translucent outsole and white rice graphics on the insoles.

The Nike Air Max 90 “Onigiri” releases as part of the Air Max “Mini-Mart” Series on March 19th, 2021 via select retailers and Nike.com, most likely as a Japan-exclusive.
