The Nike Mercurial soccer cleat has seen a handful of iterations since its 1998 debut, each version bringing innovations that have propelled the sport further. The Swoosh has now unveiled its fastest boot yet, the Air Zoom Mercurial.
The boost in speed is accomplished with the introduction of a new three-quarter-length articulated Zoom Air bag built uniquely around the needs of the footballer. It sits directly inside of the plate of the boot, bringing the foot closer to the ground, and features flex grooves that provide flexibility and natural movement of the foot.
The upper has also been updated with a new evolution of Vaporposite called Vaporposite+. The grip-enhancing chevron mesh texture with Flyknit lining helps with ball control at high speeds, while a data-driven speed cage system offers lockdown support where footballers need it most. The Air Zoom Mercurial also introduces a tri-star stud on the bottom of the boot for greater lateral movement control.
“Being a Mercurial athlete, I’m always thinking about fast. I want to be faster than my opponent” says French Forward Kylian Mbappe. “What excited me most is that this technology is revolutionary. Air is what’s really going to put the Mercurial athletes in the best conditions to perform.”
The majority of the 2022 Mercurial line up, specifically Academy and Club styles, are made with at least 20% recycled content by weight.
The retail launch colorway of the Nike Air Zoom Mercurial features a clean white upper with Bright Crimson “AIR” branding in large letters on the side panels. A second “Bonded” colorway will be debuted on the pitch this summer during the women’s 2023 World Cup qualifiers. It features a blend of orange and green hues as well as the Latin phrase for “move together.”
