The Nike Atsuma Reduces Material Waste by Increasing Pattern Efficiency

Nike has introduced their latest classically styled runner called the Atsuma. It features a lateral side Swoosh mirrored by a cutout version on the medial side. With this design, Nike improves on traditional cut-and-sew techniques, employing offcuts which would normally be seen as waste as critical components of the shoe’s construction.

Increased pattern efficiency doesn’t stop at the Swooshes. The shapes of the eyestays and orange heel counters also employ the use of negative space. Even the blue hangtag attached to the laces is made from a cutout on the outsole. Sustainability is also kept in mind with the sock liner, which is made from recycled materials.

The Nike Atsuma will make its debut on January 1st at select retailers and Nike.com. Get a first look at its design features below.
