Nike has unveiled a new collection for 2022’s Black History Month. Since 2005, these collections have celebrated Black heritage with the goal of creating awareness, inspiring athletes, and fueling dialogue and action to create positive change.
This year’s collection is tied to the Nike Future Movement Broadcast series, a talk show hosted by global civil rights advocate Janaya Future Khan. Launched in 2021, FM Broadcast features conversations with inspiring Black athletes, advocates, and creators who are driving change and creating a better future for their community. The next episode of Nike Future Movement Broadcast premieres on February 22nd and features feature Olympians Simone Manuel, Ibtihaj Muhammad, and Dr. John Carlos.
At the heart of the product collection is the Nike Air Force 1 Low FM By You. Options for these customizable AF-1s include translucent paneling that transforms to reveal an intricate pattern, as well as wear-away leather panels that reveal colors inspired by the flags of African and Caribbean countries. There is also an option to add a personalized, laser-etched message on the shoe’s dubrae. Nike has teamed up with three Black leaders to create their own designs for the shoe, including 3x Olympian Daryl Homer, Toronto Six’s Saroya Tinker, and Thinkwatts Foundation founder Brandon ‘Stix’ Salaam-Bailey.
In addition to the product collection, Nike has also announced this year’s national and local grantees for NIKE, Inc.’s $140 million Black Community Commitment. National grantee recipients include Son of A Saint, All Star Code, Big Brother Big Sisters of America, and the Equal Justice Initiative. On the local level, Nike has invested $2.75 million over 44 organizations across the country in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, Memphis, St. Louis, and Boston.
