Nike will be releasing a trio of sneakers to celebrate the Mexican holiday of Dia De Los Muertos: the Air Force 1 “La Calaca”, the Air Max 95 “La Catrina”, and the Cortez “El Altar”.

Each of the three sneakers feature a unique design to represent a different aspect of the holiday. The Air Force 1 is used to represent “La Calaca”, or a skeleton or skull typically dressed in festive colors and depicted dancing or playing instruments to show that death isn’t something to be feared and should be celebrated rather than mourned. The Air Force 1 does this by mimicking a sugar skull, a common candy treat seen during Dia de Los Muertos. The white upper represents the sugar, while the colorful lining mimics the decorative style of the skulls.

The Air Max 95 represents “La Catrina,” a famous Day of the Dead figure of a skeleton of a high-society lady wearing a feathered hat that was originally designed by artist Jose Guadalupe Posada as a satirical image reminding us that death comes for us all, regardless of wealth or status. Despite it’s satirical meaning, the image of the smiling woman has grown to represent how joyous of an occasion death is. The Air Max 95 is designed to appear as “La Catrina” with a lacing system made to look like ribs and a white heel for the spine while the mesh mimics the usually custom lace shawls and gowns that La Catrina is seen wearing during the holiday completed with a black to white layered gradient upper and a translucent green outsole.

The Cortez represents “El Altar” or ofrenda which are used to honor loved ones who have passed and usually contain items to represent the elements to help guide spirits into the afterlife. The Cortez depicts this on the insole with a print of some of the elements seen in an ofrenda, like sugar skulls, candles, papel picado, and lace table clothes. The shoe has a black suede upper with orange accents and a white Swoosh.

Each shoe is completed with a reflective design made to look like papel picado, a tradition of cutting paper with intricate designs and figures. The Day of the Dead pack is set to release October 25th at select retailers and Nike.com. Take a full look at each shoe below.
