Following a couple leaks and teasers, Patta officially announces a new Nike Air Max 1 collection and film series titled The Wave.
“We’re excited to launch the Air Max 1 and The Wave as the ignition point for a more purpose-driven evolution in our partnership with Nike,” says Gee Schmidt, co-founder of Patta. “Product will always remain a thread of what we deliver, and together, we’re committed to developing nuanced projects and narratives that aim to truly serve and drive change for our community.”
The first Patta x Nike Air Max 1, the “Monarch” colorway, is unveiled alongside a matching apparel collection and the first chapter of the film series: Waves Not Cycles. There will be four chapters in total, which likely indicates that there will be four colorways of the Patta Air Max 1. Each pair features a reimagined ‘wave’ mudguard with a mini embroidered Swoosh and comes packaged in a collector’s box with a silver-plated charm bracelet that gives a nod to Patta’s Surinamese heritage.
The four short films are directed by burgeoning filmmaker Mahaneela, who worked under the mentorship of the critically acclaimed Steve McQueen. “Since I started making films and photography, my work has always been about finding ways to show love to people that look like me,” says Mahaneela. “Patta are a great example of how creativity can manifest into authentic relationships and give back to the people and places we are from. For many young Black and Brown filmmakers, Steve McQueen and his legacy have been somewhat of a north star for us. To be able to collaborate with him on this project, which for me is a love letter to my fellow creatives of colour, has been unforgettable.”
