Supreme Celebrates the Iconic Photography of Ray DeCarava

Supreme is following up last week’s Stone Island collab by teaming up with DeCarava Archives on a new collection for Spring 2022 that features the iconic photography of Roy DeCarava.

Born in Harlem in 1919, Roy DeCarava came of age during the Harlem Renaissance. He received early critical acclaim for imaging the lives of African Americans and jazz musicians in the communities where he lived and worked. By the late 1940s, DeCarava was printing striking, shadowy silver gelatin prints that would open up new technical possibilities in contemporary photography. DeCarava’s techniques and subject matter makes him a celebrated pioneer in the field of black and white fine art photography.

For this collection, Supreme chose to highlight two of DeCarava’s works. Mississippi Freedom Marcher (Washington, D.C., 1963) and a portrait of Malcolm X shot in 1964. The former appears on tees, while the Malcolm X photograph appears on both tees and hoodies. Both of the original photos by DeCarava were printed using his signature gelatin silver print technique.

The Supreme x Ray DeCarava collection will be available this Thursday, May 19th at Supreme locations and on the Supreme website. All profits will benefit the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. Check out the collection below.
