Original Story (08/19/20): After weeks of mysterious packages and intel sent to various gaming influencers, Treyarch has finally revealed that the next Call of Duty game will be entitled Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War.
While the franchise’s return to the Black Ops line is not wholly unexpected, it looks like it’s going back in time; a brief teaser released via the developer’s YouTube account includes snippets of actual historical footage and an interview with real-life KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov on the Soviet Union’s plans to destabilize the USA. This would seem to place the upcoming game’s events around the timeline of the original (and beloved) Call of Duty: Black Ops, but it’s unknown whether or not the two games’ stories will intersect (or if the new game will include elements of the old.)
The trailer ends with the game’s title card and mention of a worldwide reveal on August 26th. The video’s description, however, seems to hint that at least some aspect of this reveal will take place in Verdansk, Call of Duty: Warzone’s massive battle royale map. While some of the ARG leading up to the teaser reveal took place within Warzone, it’s unknown what kind of integration Black Ops: Cold War’s marketing campaign will have with the current game. Warzone is immensely popular, though, and an in-game reveal would be an easy and interactive way to draw hundreds of thousands of eyes.
