After a string of disappointing movie releases, WB/DC seem to have bounced back with “Aquaman” and “Shazam!”. They’ll be looking to keep the winning streak alive with “Joker”, their upcoming release starring Joaquin Phoenix.
The film tells the story of Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian disregarded by society who is driven insane and becomes a psychotic criminal mastermind. “I used to think my life was a tragedy, but now I realize it’s a comedy”, shares Fleck.
Phoenix is the fifth person to portray the Dark Knight’s arch-nemesis on the big screen, following in the footsteps of Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto. While it will be hard to top Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance, Phoenix shows great promise in the teaser trailer, plus he has a great supporting cast: Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Marc Maron (to name a few). It will also be interesting to see how director Todd Phillips handles a dark and gritty film, since he’s best known for his work on the silly “Hangover” comedies.
