Dr. Martens lovers will be happy to know a Basquiat-themed collection is in the works. This adds to the British footwear brand’s list of heavy-hitting collabs for 2021, which so far include the likes of Rick Owens, CLOT, and BAPE x mastermind.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s name and work may be found in a variety of cultural collaborations. He was an American artist who rose to prominence during the Neo-expressionist movement in the 1980s. Thousands of paintings and sketches bear witness to his legacy. Given the current social and political climates throughout the world, his work is very pertinent today. As a result, artists of all mediums continue Basquiat’s critiques of racism in their own work. People are still ecstatic when something related to him hits the market. What started as a passionate artist’s venture through subway tunnels and New York City walls quickly erupted into an entire artist-led era of art. The footwear collection encapsulates that through the 1460 boot, the 1461 shoe, and a backpack. Design elements take on famed depictions of the late artist’s work. Each piece features Basquiat’s ‘Untitled’ (1982) and ‘Pez Dispenser’ (1984).

The 1460 and 1461 take on the signature smooth black construction. More detailing comes in the form of familiar heel loops, a pad print on the sole and lace jewels. The 1460 boot features the former along its main construction and sock liner. The design is bolder, using the upper for a colorful canvas. The artist’s signature crown is printed on the backstrap, accompanied by the smooth vamp. The 1461 silhouette takes on the ‘Pez Dispenser’ piece, taking on the familiar dinosaur along the upper and sock liner. The leather backstrap comes in a yellow shade that matches the aforementioned crown detail.

As for the backpack, a thick leather exterior gives way to Basquiat’s ‘Untitled’ (1982) that pairs well with the rest of the collection. It also prints the artist’s crown motif for extra branding.

For art and footwear lovers alike, the Dr. Martens x Basquiat Summer 2021 collection will be available next month. Catch it on the Dr. Martens website and select retailers on July 3rd.
