New Balance is celebrating its made-up “Grey Day” holiday this year with grey versions of the classic 574, the new 57/40, and an “Un-N-Ding” version of the 574. The annual celebration pays tribute to New Balance’s iconic grey colorway that dresses many of its classic models.
This year’s Grey Day collection pays homage to the classic 574, designed in the ’80s as a more practical running shoe that combines elements of the 576 upper and the 577 sole. However, the 574 became much more than just a running shoe. It’s classic design and versatility has made it a go-anywhere shoe, so much so that New Balance launched a “Worn by Anyone” campaign around the model.
New Balance’s 2021 “Grey Day” lineup features the 574 in its original grey color scheme, as well as a grey colorway of the 57/40, a modern twist on the 574 that was introduced earlier this year. The “Un-N-Ding” 574, as its clever nickname implies, is stripped of its N branding on the side panels. It also features gold hits on the tongue tag and heel, as well as weathered black rubber outsole, giving the shoe an aged look as a nod to the model’s history which spans over three decades.
