Nike is following up last year’s Flyleather collection, made in collaboration with Chinese artist Ruohan Wang, with a new collection of footwear, this time teaming up with Tokyo-born artist Mayumi Yamase on an Air Force 1 and Blazer Low.
Taking a circular design approach, the uppers on both the Air Force 1 and Blazer Low are made from at least 50 percent recycled leather fibers. The white bases and grey overlays serve as a neutral palette for Mayumi’s colorful and whimsical graphics.
According to Mayumi, the playful details are inspired by a belief in community as a creative, dynamic variable in her projects. “Community gives me a sense of comfort and fun in my daily life, but it also stretches my imagination and surprises me, leading to discoveries in my own artwork that challenge my expectations,” she says.
The Mayumi Yamase x Nike Flyleather Summer 2021 collection will release beginning May 19th on SNKRS, NikeLab MA5 and DSM Ginza.
