The latest colorway of the Nike Air Max 90 embodies a classic Mexican style of wrestling known as Lucha Libre. Luchadores (wrestlers) are commonly known for wearing a mask in their matches. This spread throughout the sport which emasculated a global, cult-like fan base. Nike is paying homage to the 150-year-old tradition with a new Air Max 90 “Lucha Libre” sneaker.
The patent and white tumbled leather are reversed on each shoe, replicating popping colors like a luchadors costume. Black and white mesh is alternated on each toe box like the leather materials. On the right sneaker, the phrase los técnicos (good guys aka “faces”) is engraved in the patent leather upper while the left shoe feature the phrase los rudos (bad guys aka “heels”). A blue and yellow luchador mask is placed on the lateral heel, with matching gradient Nike Air patch on each tongue. The insoles also get the gradient treatment and feature “¡Lucha Libre!” branding.
Look for the Nike Air Max 90 “Lucha Libre” to be available at select Nike stores and via the SNKRS app sometime later this year. For now, check out official images of the shoe below and stay tuned to Modern Notoriety for release updates.
