In April of 2004, the Nike SB tier experimented with something footwear brands never dared to touch on – cannabis. What is now legal in 11 states and legal for medical use in 33 states, marijuana was once a stigmatic topic of discussion that later became an industry worth $52 billion in today’s value.
While the world slowly adapted to marijuana being a recreational drug, Nike SB was already experimenting with 2004’s “Hemp Pack”. The pack consisted of three SB Dunk Low’s featuring a 100% hemp constructed upper, with hits of red mahogany, bonsai, and cascade blue on the swoosh. In the later years to come, Nike SB continued it’s cannabis inspired drops by calling upon illustrator and owner of Send Help Skateboards Todd Bratrud. The artist became an important figure in the SB community and gained notoriety with 2010’s SKUNK Nike SB Dunk High. The Dunk featured a two tone green upper to represent the nug texture, alongside a purple swoosh and outsole. This was the beginning of a series of SB releases including the Cheech and Chong High, White Widow Mid and 2020’s Strawberry Cough and Purple Skunk.
