Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge made history when he broke the 2-hour marathon barrier in 2019 while wearing the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT%. The model erupted in popularity amongst long-distance runners once it officially launched, as it had proven itself as the pinnacle racing shoe.
Although the Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% made major strides, it did leave some runners wanting improvements on stability against the ultra-soft Zoom midsole. Taking in all the feedback, Nike announces the Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 2. The second generation silhouette once again features a full-length ZoomX foam midsole, a full-length curved carbon plate, and dual Zoom Air pods on the forefoot. Improvements include additional foam under the Zoom Air pods for more energy return, a slightly wider heel for stability, and Atomknit 2.0 on the upper that securely locks down the foot while providing breathability and comfort.
The launch colorway of the Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% 2 is dubbed the “Prototype” and consists of a white upper with hits of orange on the tongue and outsole and red Zoom Air pod units. The “18240-14″ written on the medial midfoot is common notation in sneaker prototype testing.
“The Alphafly NEXT% 2 is built for athletes going after their personal best in the marathon,” says Elliott Heath, Nike Running Footwear Product Manager. “Since its inception, the Alphafly has been inspired by the most elite runners going after world records. The updates we’ve made in the second iteration continue to equip elite athletes competing on the world stage but were focused on improving the racing experience for all runners chasing their personal best.”
