Original Story (09/24/20): Union Los Angeles is following up its super-hyped Jordan collection with its next sneaker collaboration, teaming up with Converse to create a new Chuck Taylor All Star.

This CTAS features a creamy white upper covered in artwork by acclaimed interior designer Sheila Bridges. This “Harlem Toile” artwork is one of her famous wallpapers and is used on the walls of Union’s Tokyo flagship. Union’s UN/LA tag is stitched on the lateral, while the classic CTAS badge is found on the medial side in white. Under the upper we have a white midsole and a yellow-orange outsole that matches the Union tag on the upper.

Update (10/01/20): Converse, Union, and Sheila Bridges have officially announced their collaboration. It consists of the Chuck Taylor All Star, a hoodie, and a bucket hat, all covered in Sheila’s “Harlem Toile de Jouy” artwork.

Traditionally, the Eurocentric fabric art known as toile depicts French nobles and white peasants in pastoral scenes dancing and having a good time. Bridges saw a lack of representation in the artform and created her own spin that celebrate the beauty of Black culture.

The collection will be available via unionlosangeles.com, converse.com (10am EDT), and select global retailers on October 13th. Check out the collection below, as well as a short film that recontextualizes the toile to reflect the youth of Harlem today. This film was shot by Raj Debah at notable neighborhood landmarks including Morningside Park, Marcus Garvey Park and the National Black Theater and stars members of Harlem-based arts organizations: the Harlem School of the Arts, Hoops by the River, and National Double Dutch League.
